Gladys was born on 30 Jan 1901 in Wayne Township, Auglaize Co., Ohio. She had light brown eyes and medium to dark brown hair. Her birth record lists her as "Gladdus Ann Nance". In the 1910 US Federal Census, in Clay, Auglaize Co., Ohio, are Andrew J Nance (47), Sarah O B Nance (37), Bryan F Nance (15), James F Nance (11), Gladys A Nance (9), Dorenel E Nance (5), and Lillian S Nance (2) with all being born in Ohio. In the 1920 US Federal census in Claridon, Marion, Ohio, the family shows Andrew J Nance (56), Sarah (45), Fredrick (20), Gladys (18), Dorrance (15), Lillian (12), and Ella (9). In the 1930 census in Marion, Marion Co., Ohio, Gladys is listed as 29yo and living in the King family estate (Etowah) as a servant. King family were Ray R King (40), Hilda G King (40) Dorothy Rae King (11), and Carolyn King (6). Basically she was the nanny. (Her sister Lillian was the cook). On 30 Sep 1930 The Telegraph-Forum newspaper, it is recorded that the Nance family was in an automobile accident. Gladys was not injured, but the family remembered this accident until they passed. Some of them never drove again, or even rode in cars. Gladys did however. Late in life for both of them, Gladys (35) married Orville Johnson Morton (36) at her parent's house at 4:00 Sunday afternoon by Rev. W. R. Ellis, pastor of the Church of Christ. In the 1940 US Federal Census, in Canaan, Morrow Co., Ohio, Orville is 39 and Gladys is 38. In the 1950 US Federal Census, in Canaan, Morrow Co., Ohio, the family shows Orville (50), Gladys (49), Sara Jane Morton, daughter (9), and Dorothy A. Morton, daughter (6). At an unknown date in the 1950, Gladys was struck by lightning when she ran outside to secure her baby chickens from the storm. She died 14 Aug 1974 in Mt. Gilead, Morrow Co., Ohio and was buried on 17 Aug 1974 in the Caledonia Cemetery in Caledonia, Marion Co., Ohio. // Gladys was my grandmother and is deeply missed!
