Jonathan Baldwin was the first settler within the present limits of Marion Twp., & also the incorporated limits of Blanchester. He came with his father, Benjamin Baldwin, from Morgantown, Virginia, & remained with his father until 1804 when he emigrated to Guernsay County. In two years he removed to Warren County, near Morrow, & worked by the month building flat boats for William Whitacre, with whom he remained until 1811. He married Harriet Blancett, of Warren County, & the same year removed to the "Old Sawyer Farm" near Springboro, in Warren County.
He enlisted in the War of 1812 under General Harrison & served that year.Returning to Springboro, he remained there until 1814, when he came to Marion Twp. & settled on a tract of land of 130 acres in Second Creek. This land was recently owned by Jacob Shank & is on the West side of North Broadway. Jonathan & his brothers, Samuel & Benjamin II, of Warren County, cut two logs & in a very short time erected the first dwelling in Marion Twp.
