George and his brother John died in the "Tear Down Murders" of Warren County, Iowa. George was stabbed twice and died immediately, John was stabbed twice and died within minutes. Their father David King Howrey was wounded and recovered. One more boy, not related, also died.

George is buried next to brother John W. Howrey.
