However, he was earning new fans with tours that found him opening for more established acts, including Doves, Starsailor, Stereophonics, and Dido. Matthew Jay grew up in Abergavenny, South Wales. His parents were folk musicians and he joined the family band at a young age. After the release of Draw, Jay was often compared to other British singer-songwriters like Nick Drake and Badly Drawn Boy. Jay, who was 24 years old, died after falling from a window on the seventh floor in his apartment in Nottingham, England. It was not known at press time wether his death was accidental or a suicide. He was alone at the time and left no note.
