In 1922, the Troxell family moved to a homestead in Bennett County near Martin, SD. Norma attended grade school in a one room school house. She graduated from Bennett County High School in 1937. She also attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD. Norma enjoyed life ranching and farming in Bennett County with her family. During this time, Norma became interested in training horses and attended many fairs and rodeos as a part of the "Troxell All American Trick Horses Show."
On May 9, 1947, Norma married Elton Adams in Lead, SD. Norma and Elton worked together harvesting wheat for a few years. They also worked and lived in Indiana, Utah, and California. In 1952, they moved to Nemo, SD, to help with a family run a business called the 4T Guest Ranch. Norma operated the Brandin Iron Café as part of this endeavor until the guest ranch was sold in 1968. She then worked at the Box Elder Job Corps Center near Nemo, as an instructor in culinary arts until her retirement in 1982.
Norma was active in the Nemo community, participating in the community relations council at the Box Elder Job Corps, the Nemo Firebelles, and as a Cub Scout den mother. She was also involved in the South Dakota Restaurant Associations, the Shriner's Handicapped Children's Auxiliary, and the Historical Society.
Norma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Norma lived in Nemo for 60 years.
She is survived by her sons, Randall (Cathie) of Rapid City, Russell of Belle Fourche; her grandchildren Mandy, Chris, Andrew, and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Vincent, Nicholas, and Elsie. Norma is also survived by her sisters, Doris Audiss, JoAnn Troxell, and Vonda Shaw; her brother, Wayne Troxell; numerous nieces and nephews including, Rocky, Grant, Sandra, Julie, and Janet.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elton; three siblings; and grandson, Matt.
Services will be Monday, October 31, 2011, at the Nemo Community Church with the Rev. Nick Rombough officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will follow at the Nemo Community Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Nemo Community Church or Nemo Fire Department.
