Immigrated to Canada in 1866 and graduated from Toronto School of Medicine in 1887.

Went to Korea under the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church of the U.S.A. Expelled by the invading Japanese in 1934.

Married Margaret Jane "Jennie" Barnes.

Father of ten including Lera Chalmers (Avison) Larson, William Raymond Avison, Lawrence Avison, Gordon Wilberforce Avison, Douglas Bray Avison, Edward Severance Avison, Oliver Martin Underwood Avison, and Artie Avison.

His biography was penned by Allen DeGray Clark, son of missionary Charles Allen Clark.
