Gertie was born Grietje Uithol on 29 March 1882 to Jan (later John) and Tryntje (later Katherine) Vanvliet Uithol in Aarlanderveen, Alphen Aan Den Rijn, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. She was the 3rd child born to the couple and in 1882, she, her parents, and older brother Gysbert (later Gilbert)departed for Amsterdam in steerage aboard the Schiedam arriving in New York on 26 May 1884, shortly after Gertie's 2nd birthday. In addition to her older sister, Klazina, dying in Holland before they sailed, while enroute her parents also lost a second daughter who was born on Mar. 18, 1884 prior to their departure. On 13 May 1884, Dammesje died at sea, on the North Atlantic Ocean of meningites on board S.S. "Schiedam", 3rd Class. The family settled near Grand Rapids in Byron Center, where father and son, John & Gilbert were celery farmers for a time. Gertie is on the 1920 census working in the home of an elderly couple, the Weavers, as a servant. Five years later, she married Otto Rysdyk and to them were born 6 children, Gertrude, John, Frank, Katherine, Pauline and Otto. In 1921, the family (with the exception of Otto who was born a few years later) returned to the Netherlands to visit Otto's aged mother. Gertie died at age 59 and was survived by her husband, her children and her brother, Gilbert. May she rest in peace.
