CHARLES AYERS DEAD
The above named old resident of Lakenan passed away at his home in that city early Monday morning after a lingering illness of many months duration. Deceased was born May [sic] 20 [sic], 1841, at White Hall, Ill. In 1870 he was married to Miss Mary Huggins and to this union two children, a son and a daughter, were born. Both preceded him many years to the Great Beyond.
He leaves to mourn him, his widow and two sisters, Mrs. A. F. Huggins, of this city, and Mrs. A. E. Graham, of East St. Louis.
The funeral services were conducted at the residence yesterday morning at 9 o'clock under the auspices of the Court of Honor Lodge and the remains were laid to rest in the Hunnewell cemetery.
Mr. Ayers was a man of unusual devotion to principle and had the confidence and respect of all who knew him.

Charles H. Avers Dead.
Charles H Ayers died at his home in Lakenan early Monday morning, after having suffered with cancer several years. The malignant growth first appeared on his lip several years ago. Physicians cut it out several times and all the remedies prescribed by cancer experts were tried without avail.
Deceased was born in Whitehall, Ill., May [sic] 20 [sic], 1841, where he grew to young manhood. As a young man he enlisted upon the side of the Union in the civil war, being a member of Company D. 61st Regiment Illinois Infantry.
Shortly after the close of the war he came to Missouri and in May 1870 married Miss Mary Huggins, a sister of Postmaster A. F. Huggins, of this city. They went to Whitehall, Ill., where they resided until 1876, when they came to Missouri and located at Lakenan, which place remained their home until death claimed Mr. Ayers. Two children, a son and a daughter, were born of this marriage and both preceded the father in death.
Mr. Ayers was a particularly warm friend of the writer and we feel a personal loss in his death. He was a student of the affairs of his state and of the nation, and, being a man of strong character, of courage and conviction, his devotion to principle excited the admiration even of those who did not agree with him. These characteristics, together with an unselfish disposition, his cleverness toward neighbors, his never failing loyalty to his friends and his candor toward all, made for him many warm friends in his home community and throughout Shelby county.
The funeral took place at the home Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock under the auspices of the Lakenan Court of Honor, of which the deceased was a social member. Burial was in the Hunnewell cemetery. Peace to his ashes and our sincere sympathy to Mrs. Ayers in her bereavement.
