Father of Five Killed in Dundee Traffic Accident

DUNDEE | A 39-year-old father of five was killed Friday morning when he was thrown from his truck following a crash.
John Wayne Floyd, of 2324 Ave. C S.W. in Winter Haven, was driving west on Main Street at about 9 a.m. when the box-style truck he was driving was struck by a 1999 Lincoln Town Car driven by Ethel Smith Wilkinson, 73, of 92 Emerald Drive E. in Dundee, a report from the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
The impact caused Floyd's truck to spin and flip, the report said. Floyd, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown and pinned beneath the truck. He died at the scene, the report said.
Wilkinson was driving south on Lake Dell Road when her vehicle struck the right rear axle of Floyd's truck, deputies said. Wilkinson was taken to Lake Wales Medical Center with minor injuries.
Floyd's truck belonged to the Randy Dowd Plumbing Company, which is owned by Dundee Town Councilman Randy Dowd.
The accident happened near Dowd's house on West Main Street. Although he was not home at the time. Dowd was at Home Depot when his neighbor called and told him to return home.
"This was the last thing I envisioned," he said.
Dowd said Floyd was a subcontractor who had worked for him on and off for about three years. He was also Dowd's nephew from a previous marriage.
"He was an extremely hard worker; a guy that in the last 10 years turned his life around," Dowd said. "You just couldn't ask for a nicer guy."
No charges have been filed but the investigation is continuing.
