Indiana Governor. Moving to Indiana, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835 and established a legal career in several states. Entering politics, he was judge of Marion County Common Pleas Court, in 1849 and served as Indiana's Lieutenant Governor, (1857-60). When Governor Ashbel Willard passed away, Hammond was appointed as a Democrat the 12th Governor of Indiana, serving (1860-61). During his short tenure, he advocated for a bill that would safeguard the ballot box during elections and he endorsed the building of a refuge home for juvenile offenders. After leaving office, due to ill health he retired from politics and lived in Colorado, until his death at age 60.
