HAZEL GREEN, Wis. -- Earl J. Smith, 80, of rural Hazel Green, died at 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Hazel Green, with the Rev. James Parker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., where there will be a parish rosary/scripture service at 1:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.

Earl was born on March 12, 1931, near Peosta, Iowa, son of Neal and Glenn (Heacock) Smith.

He married Elaine Levens on Feb. 19, 1952, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Galena, Ill. They farmed on Earl's home place in Peosta for 11 years. In February of 1963, they moved to Hazel Green Township and continued to farm side by side on the Double EE farm. Earl will be remembered for his devotion to his wife, Elaine of 59 years.

He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish and a 3rd Degree member of the Hazel Green Knights of Columbus, Council 7370. He was a proud supporter of the new St. Francis de Sales Church built in 1991/1992.

Earl took great pride in the family farm and the International machinery. He was dedicated to his faith, family and farm. Many people remember Earl for his quick wit and humorous stories.

Surviving are his wife Elaine; six children, Nancy (Roger) Kern, of Hazel Green, Max (Brenda) Smith, of East Dubuque, Michele (Tim) Droessler, of Hazel Green, Tammi (Steve) Day, of Waukesha; Andy (DeeDee) Smith and Sam (Karen) Smith, both of Hazel Green; 16 grandchildren, Becky (Pat) Naderman, Laurie (Brett) Runde, Jeanna (Matt) McBain, Krista (Eric) Thompson, Riley Smith, Marah (Eric) Odgers, Michael (Rachel) Droessler, Nick (Heather) Droessler, Marissa Droessler, Natalie (Dan) Baertschy, Justin (Renee) Day, Rachel and Sarah Day, Josh Smith, Ali and Alayna Smith; two stepgrandchildren, Josh (Stacy Hocking) Kern and Mandy (Dennis) McWilliams; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Merlin) Reuter, of Dubuque; sisters-in-law, Mary Smith, of Graf, Iowa, Darlene Smith of Surprise, Ariz., and Mary Smith, of Key West, Iowa; and his beloved poodle dog, Benji.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Pearl Spoerl, Donald (Effie) Smith, Arvel Smith, Francis "Sam" Smith and Orlin Smith; a son-in-law, Ray Koerperick; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Justin and Alberta Levens.
