Born in Jacksonville, Fla., he was a son of the late Dallas Williamson Pettus and Beulah Patterson Pettus. He was married to the late Christine Brewer Pettus for 54 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of its 25-Year Club.
Survivors include three sons, William "Larry" Pettus and his wife, Jewel, of Parkersburg, W.Va., James David Pettus and his wife, Debbie, of York and Chris D. Pettus of Rock Hill; two daughters, Janice P. Freeman of Indian Land and Donna P. Faris and her husband, Steve, of York; a brother, Joseph A. Pettus of Indian Land; three sisters, Miriam Shapcott of Staunton, Va., Ruth Byrd of North Myrtle Beach and Virginia Danenhower of Rock Hill; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Barry Yates and the Rev. Michael Ritter. The family will receive friends following the service.
