West Miles "Boo" Bateman Jr. departed this life on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in Lynchburg, to the late West Miles Bateman and Lucy N. Bateman. He was also preceded in death by a brother John Thomas "JT" Bateman and a sister, Sarah M. Bateman.
He was educated in the Lynchburg Public Schools, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service. At an early age he was baptized at Diamond Hill Baptist Church. He was also a troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America.
West is survived by his devoted sister, Shirley B. Tucker, other family members, William Early, Barbara and Jerry Dillard; six nieces, Sarah E. Burford, Maria F. Steeples, Shirley G. Spinner, Aldora D. Rucker, Wilma K. Rucker and Lisa K. Dillard; eight nephews, Sidney Thompson Jr., Harry Lee Bateman, Alphonso Bateman, Ronnie Bateman, Michael Early, Jerry Dillard Jr., Keith Dillard and Darryl Simmons; a host of other relatives, neighbors, and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Diamond Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren L. Anderson, officiating and the Rev. James E. Cobbs, eulogist. Interment will be in the Baptist Cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post 16. His remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. The family is receiving friends and the cortege will assemble at 303 Wadsworth St. at the residence of his sister, Shirley Tucker. Condolences can be e-mailed to [email protected].
