Calvin was a printer by trade. He worked for newspapers in Pennsylvania, Utah, Michigan and Hawaii, as well as Canada and Australia. In the closing months of the First World War he served in the medical department of the Quartermaster Corp. He married widow Caroline Krauthaus (nee Jardon) in 1922 and divorced in 1938. He had two stepsons from Caroline's previous marriage but no children of his own. Calvin died at the Union Printer's Home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was cremated and his ashes interred with his parents in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St Louis, Missouri. He was a member of the American Legion, the International Typographical Union, and the Freemasons.
