John was the son of John Walker Jr., and possibly Polly. Walkertown is named for this family. They lived in a two story log house that was located on Pear Street near Walkertown School. They had twelve children. He dug a spring from solid rock which is where the name for Spring Street came from. It is located there still. In the 1860 census he owned 2,500 acres, and his father owned 10,000 acres in Perry Co. At one time he was jailer and county judge. He performed the wedding ceremony for his grandson, George Madison Walker, and his wife, JoAnna. John died of old age in 1898, while living with his daughter, Nancy Messer. It is one of the oldest homes in Hazard.
