Actor, Screenwriter. He was an American writer of 42 screenplays, including the 1952 "Bella Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Guerilla." Many times, his only contribution was to add dialogue to others' screenplays. He was an actor in 139 films, including: "Brother Orchid" in 1940, "Maisie Was a Lady" in 1941, "Blondie's Holiday" in 1947, and "The Asphalt Jungle" in 1950. One of his last roles was a policeman in "The Buster Keaton Story," and his last role was uncredited in "Beau James." Both were released posthumously in 1957. He had the supporting role of Sgt. Pete Karelsen in the Academy Award-winning 1953 film "From Here to Eternity." He had minor roles usually as a bartender, policeman, or an uncredited role. From 1922 until divorced in 1942, he was married to actress Irene Ryan, who earned her fame in the role of "Granny" on the television series "Beverly Hillbillies." Besides acting and writing, he is credited with being a director.
