Jens Johannes Anderson was born 7 Feb 1840 at Fosnes, Nord Trondelag, Norway. He was one of two sons born to Andrew Anderson (1802 – 1852) and his wife, Pethrina Strand (1820 – 1895). Jens' brother's name was Peder Anderson. Peder also came to America, was married and lived in northern Minnesota.

Jens and Peder's father was a farmer during the summer months on his own farm and was a fisherman during the winter months along the Norwegian coast. After their father, Andrew died in 1852, the old farm was sold. Their mother, Pethrina, stayed in Norway and died there at the age of seventy-five years in 1895.

Jens spent his first 16 years living on the family farm and helping work the home farm. He attended local schools to gain his elementary school education. Jens married Pethrine Lovise Eliason 28 May 1869 at the Nesne Kirke, Dønna, Norway.

Pethrine was born 1 Jul 1836 at Alstahaug, Norway. She was the daughter of Elias Jensen and his wife Dorothea Maria Pedersdtr Hellsvik.

Jens and Pethrine decided to come to America soon after they were married. They made the trip across the Atlantic Ocean and headed for Southern Minnesota where they stayed about five months with an uncle of Jens' in Houston County.

They headed north where they established a homestead of 160 acres in Sections 19 and 20 of Moorhead Township in Clay County, MN. Their first child, Ida, was born at Alexandria, MN on August 22, 1870. She would pass away two years later on 20 Aug 1872 at Moorhead. The Andersons lived on their Clay County farm for 11 years. Three more children were born here: Anna, Einar and Kathinka.

In 1881 Jens Anderson purchased a half-section of land in Section 9 of Lee Township in Norman County, MN. The family moved to Lee Township and rented out the Clay County farm. They continued renting until 1915, when that farm was sold. Jens Anderson set about improving the farmland and building a modern set of farm buildings and home. He carried on diversified farming until 1914 when he retired from active farming and then rented the farm out.

In the early years of farming in Minnesota, Jens worked two yokes of oxen. He also raised and sold oxen and he made many a sale in those early days in the Red River Valley.

Jens and Pethrine were the parents of four children: Ida C. 22 Aug 1870 – 20 Aug 1872, Anna Pauline 12 May 1872 – 13 Dec 1947, Einar Ditlef 26 Feb 1874 – 12 Apr 1964 (Nellie Alma Young 4 Jun 1881 – 23 Feb 1981) and Kathinka Christine 7 Sep 1877 – 27 Nov 1930. For his retirement Jens built a new house west of his current home on the ridge.

He was very civic minded and worked to improve the community in which he lived. While living in Clay County, he was a member of the Township Board. When living in Lee Township he also served on the Lee Township Board and served as a commissioner on the Norman County Board of Commissioners for several terms. Locally he helped to organize the Perley Creamery and the Farmers Elevator at Perley. He also helped to organize School District #26, Riverside Schools, and served on the School Board for six years. Jens and Pethrine helped to organize and were charter members of the Landstad Lutheran Church. He was interested in the Free Lutheran organizations.

Pethrine Anderson died rather suddenly 18 Sep 1892 at the age of 56 years. Funeral services for her were held at the Bethania Lutheran Church 21 Sep 1892. Jens Anderson passed away 10 Dec 1928 at the age of 87 years.
