Henry Edward Baker was born in Vermont, 9 Oct 1894, the only son of Ferdinand and Carrie Johnson Baker. He was the third born of their four children.

His sisters were: Emily Othelia 29 Nov 1889-7 Jan 1973 (Gilbert Crosby 19 Aug 1891-10 Aug 1943), Sadie Mae 19 Sep 1891 – Jan 1981 (Bernt Cornelius Olson 27 Sep 1885-12 Jan 1978) and Edna Amanda 4 Jul 1900-26 Oct 1995 (Chester Arthur Dosland 2 Dec 1898-18 May 1988).

His father was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont and his mother was born in Norway.

Henry had attended rural school and was a clerk at the local general store, Hovden and Anderson in Perley. He slept in a back room of the Perley State Bank as night watchman for the bank. His roommate was Bennie Helland, an assistant cashier employed at the bank.

As they slept, coal gas from a basement furnace, seeped into the room and overcame them. They boarded at the Perley Hotel across the street and when they didn't arrive at their usual time for breakfast, people began to worry. Cashier Gaare tried to rouse them by banging on the door, but got no response. He proceeded to break a window in the back to gain entrance to their room. They found Henry Baker already beyond saving lying on his bed and Bennie Helland on the floor below his bed. Bennie was still alive and was brought outside to fresh air where he began to recover.

Henry was a good honest young man who showed great promise. This accident was a shock to the people of the Perley community and especially his family.

Funeral services for him were held at the Bethania Lutheran Church, rural Perley, 7 Jan 1913. Pastor Peterson from Moorhead officiated at the service.
