On April 23, 1855, the Jacobson family left their parish and received their passports May 1, 1855. They sailed from Stavanger on May 13, 1855, on the bark, Søstrene. They arrived in Quebec 2 Jul 1855. Traveling with them were the Jacob & Laurense Nilson family. Jacob Nilson was Nille Nilsdatter's brother.

The Jacobson's settled first at the Lisbon Settlement southwest of Chicago. They later moved on to Central Iowa, east of Story City in Howard Township on land (160 acres) purchased by Jacob Nilson at Ft. Des Moines on June 27, 1855. This land was virgin prairie.
