They settled in Kendall County, IL in July 1854. They lived there for some time, and following her mother's death, they moved to Roland, Iowa.

Following Carrie and Borre's marriage, they owned and operated a general store in Roland. By 1882 Barney, as Borre now called himself, and his family moved to the Red River Valley to farm.

They first lived on the White Earth Indian Reservation in Becker County, MN but eventually moved to Viding Township, east of Georgetown, MN in Clay County, MN. They farmed until 1920 when they moved to Winchester Township and then Ada, MN in retirement.

Barney and Carrie were the parents of 5 children, three of whom lived to become adults.
