Carol Raye E. Bortner, of Hanover, went home to be with the Lord, November 1, 2011, surrounded by loved ones. Carol Raye was the loving wife of Thomas D. Bortner to whom she was married for 37 years.

Born July 22, 1945, in Hanover, she was the daughter of the late Raymond J. and Margaret E. (Greenaway) Groft.

Carol Raye was a 1963 graduate of Delone Catholic High School as well as a 1964 graduate of Peg Horn School of Beauty.

She was a beautician for 21 years working for various salons in the Hanover area, and was the co-owner and business partner with her two sisters of The Rusty Naill Gift Store in Hanover from October 1985 to February 2005. Carol Raye was extremely artistic and creative, sharing herself and her talents with everyone.

Carol Raye was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hanover. She loved God, her family, friends, life and decorating her home.

Carol Raye was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Jacquelyn Carol Taylor who passed away in 2000. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her grandson, Payton T. Taylor; son-in-law, Bryan Taylor, both of Hanover; three step-daughters, Vicki Little and husband Alan, Crystal Sentz, Michelle Smeach and husband Todd, all of Hanover; her step-granddaughter, Kaila Smeach of West Chester; two sisters, Margaret P. Shaffer and husband, Dale, Anne C. Louey and husband, Eugene, both of Hanover; one nephew, Neil Johnson; three nieces, Carrie Davies, Stephanie Gray, Abbie Gosnell, and her dear friend, Sister Phyllis Brenner; and many extended family.

A Memorial Mass to celebrate and remember Carol Raye's life will be held 11 a.m. November 4, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hanover, with Fr. Joseph F. Gotwalt as the Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, Hanover.
