Hattie was born in 1882 in Iowa. Her parents were Franklin P. McNamar born in Virginia and Mary J. McNamar who was born in New York State.

Hattie was the third of their five children. Her siblings were: Jay Giles McNamar 7 Nov 1874 – 28 Oct 1936 (Agnes A. Gnadt 22 May 1885-5 Mar 1974), Willard McNamar born Feb 1878 in Iowa, Bella, born July 1882 and Adelbert George "Bert" 22 Nov 1884/85-13 Nov 1970 (Grace Alena Scott 4 Apr 1882-9 Jul 1967).

Hattie traveled to MN with her parents and siblings. In 1885 they were living in Wadena, MN, 1900 they were in Hegne Township of Norman County, MN and in 1905, they were in Good Hope Township of Norman County.

In 1920 her parents were at Lockhart, MN.

Hattie married Julius J. Johnson about 1907.

After their marriage, Hattie and Julius lived in the village of Perley, MN where he used his own barn as a livery stable. By 1920 they were living in Fargo, ND where he had worked as a butcher and then became a Standard Oil jobber.

Hattie and Julius were the parents of three children as follows: Vivian I. born in MN about 1909, Marian born in MN about 1911 and Leland R. born about 1914.
