His siblings were Thrine Christine Johnson 19 Apr 1859-12 Aug 1891 (Pastor Johan O. Hougen 6 Mar 1857-7 Jan 1927), Hans 17 Jul 1862-23 Dec 1921 (Lona P. Anderson 12 Apr 1870-9 Oct 1966), Gjert J. “George” 15 Oct 1864-15 Aug 1887 and Aaron J. 10 Jul 1867-30 Dec 1920 (Ellen Anderson 31 Aug 1877-31 Oct 1954).
John grew up and attended school in the Calamus area. On March 28, 1877, at the age of 21, he married Olivia Olson daughter of Ole and Martha Hakonson Olson in Clinton County, Iowa.
Olivia and John became the parents of three children as follows: Charles ca 1878 – unknown, Julius J. 10 Oct 1879 – 1952 (Harriet Blanche McNamar 1882-1958) and John T. (given name=Martin Johan Theodore) 10 Jul 1882-3 Dec 1954 (Ida G. Ronsberg 8 Apr 1889-9 May 1970).
In 1880 John Paul, Olivia and family moved to Minnesota. They acquired land in Section 22 of Lee Township where they farmed.
John Paul passed away 10 Jul 1883 at the age of 27. Olivia was widowed as a young woman with two young children. Olivia secondly married, Ludwig Skjold.
