Joel was a turpentine laborer and a farmer. In 1881, near Sibley's Mill at Bromley, He was shoot in the head by a black man with a pistol. It caused him to fall off the horse he was ridding and was then shot in the wrist and side. The bullet remained in his head until his death many years later. Joel's half-brother, Deputy Sheriff Abram S. "Abe" Johnson, was also killed in this shoot out.

Joel was a victim of the pneumonia/influenzia epedimic of the 1920s, along with numerious others in his family.
