FULTON - Michael D. Dabbs died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born Aug. 31, 1949, in Itawamba County to John L. and Erma Dabbs. He was a member of Friendship CME Church, where he served as chairman of the Steward Board, a member of the Trustee Board, and Adult Sunday School teacher. He was a 1967 graduate of East High School in Fulton.

His service in the United States Army began when he was drafted in 1968. He served as an infantryman, Military Police, and unit supply sergeant. He received several awards during his career including a Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon. He served a total of 33 years. He retired from the Army/Army National Guard as sergeant 1st class in 2003. He was a member of the American Legion Post 49 and the Mississippi Army National Guard Association. After retirement, he worked at DHL. A member of the Masonic Fraternal Order, he was the Worshipful Master of Abney Lodge 223A in Dorsey. He was happiest around family and friends driving his tractor, working in his garden, and working on anything that needed or didn't need fixing.

Burial will be in the Friendship CME Church Cemetery at Fulton. N.L. Jones amp& Son Funeral Directors of Tupelo is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Geneva; daughter, Stefanie (Willie) Jones of Columbus; sons: Steven (Starlette) Dabbs of Birmingham and Stanley (Shangela) Dabbs of Fulton; four grandchildren, Chelsie, Jaylan, Genise and Madison; three sisters: Monzella Edwards and Lottie (Roosevelt) Blackmon, both of Fulton, and Gwyneth (Willie) Blackmon of Hephzibah, Ga.; two brothers, Johnny Dabbs and Terry Dabbs, both of Fulton; many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Othani Dabbs; and a son, Michael Jr.
