Margaret was living in Millersburg, Mercer County, Illinois with her son John P. Miller at the time of her death. He was the oldest child in the family.

James Anderson Miller, in a letter written Nov 7, 1947, states that "grandmother Margaret Miller (nee Parkinson) died at My Uncle John P's, house in Millersburg in 1877, and was buried there."
Her tombstone is in Duncan Township, Mercer County, Illinois. Transcription of that cemetery was made in 1960 and the stone was already getting pretty worn. The following quote comes from Mercer County records: "Margaret, wife of Francis Herman, died Dec. 9, 1871, aged 61 yrs. This was a stone in Duncan Cemetery and there is a note on our cemetery cards that indicates the numbers may not be legible and that the actual year of death my be 1877 and/or the actual age may be 64. Francis is NOT buried there -- only Margaret." I know that the year 1871 is incorrect. Margaret signed a quit-claim deed:
On 12 Jan 1872 and again on 9 Aug 1875, Margaret Herman signed Quit-Claim Deeds for $100.00 and $1000.00 respectively. These deeds both contained life leases and were given to George W. Miller. Both deeds were also tied up with Trust Deeds between George W. Miller, Margaret Herman and Jacob Bear who paid one dollar as security.
George W. Miller and Martha Miller his wife, sold the property to Oliver Bear (Jacob Bear was deceased so the property was sold to his son) for $400.00 on the 24 Feb 1879. Does this Warranty Deed mean that Margaret Herman has probably passed away?
I believe that James was correct with the year 1877. Her actual age may have been 67 rather than 61 or 64. The 20 July, 1870 census says that she was 60 years old. As the head of household she probably spoke with the census taker herself. The 7 Sept.,1860 census says that she was 51 years old. To get those 2 ages correct, her birth would have been between 20th of July and the 7th of September 1809. Her parents were married in Feb 1808 and her father was deceased in Feb 1814. During that time, they had 2 daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was born in April 1812.

Headstone was difficult for them to read so to get the correct dates other records had to be used as well.
