Marvin C. Kohls, 71, formerly of 960 First Ave., Chippewa Falls, passed away peacefully the morning of Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, with his family by his side, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, after a long illness. For the past several months he had been residing at Oakwood Villa in Altoona.
Marvin was born in Cornell on May 9, 1937, to Walter and Alice (Pfister) Kohls. He grew up in the Cornell area and attended Cornell schools. He later moved to Kaukauna where he worked in a Ford garage and other places. In 1960, he moved to Ladysmith and worked at the Peavey Paper Mill until 1967 when he took a job at Presto Industries, Eau Claire. He worked there until 1973 when, due to health problems, he had to retire. After that he had his own car repair business for several years. He married Wanda Amundson at the Dallas Lutheran Church on June 6, 1964. They lived in Ladysmith, Jim Falls, and Cadott, before coming to Chippewa Falls. He was a longtime member and past officer of the Alano Club 76 in Chippewa Falls, and a member of the NRA. Marvin's greatest passion was cars. He could talk for hours about the different cars, and was called upon by many to repair their cars, tractors, farm machinery, lawn mowers and such. He did a good job and was in great demand. He also enjoyed deer and bear hunting for many years and was successful at both. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR races and Packers games, attending dirt track races and truck and tractor pulls, and collecting caps, souvenir buttons and other collectible items. He also enjoyed having coffee, visiting with family and friends and taking Laurie's dog, Casey, for rides or bringing her treats.
What Marvin couldn't express in words, he made up for in actions, by helping some of those in need, in any way he could. He also loved to play little jokes or tease family and friends and then would get a good laugh out of it.
Marvin is survived by two sons, Edward Kohls of Fall Creek and Bruce Kohls of Eau Claire; two daughters, Laurie Kohls of Eau Claire and Jennifer (Vance) Powers of Mosinee; two grandsons, Cody Kohls and Marshall Powers; and a step granddaughter, Madelynn Powers. He is also survived by three sisters, Shirley (Jack) Brauer of Sturgeon Bay, Judi (Frank) Sikora of Cadott and Janet (Charles) Seidlitz of Jim Falls; four brothers, Roger (Janice) Kohls of Cadott, Ronald (Linda) Kohls of Cornell, Glenn (Mari Lynn Putnam) Kohls of Rice Lake, and Ralph (Violet Dawes) Pfister, of Juneau; his ex-wife, Wanda, of Chippewa Falls; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Marvin will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel in Chippewa Falls with Rev. Mike Wollman, of Central Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 18 and until the time of the service Tuesday at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent to The Marvin Kohls Memorial Fund at Royal Credit Union, 215 Bay St., Chippewa Falls, WI 54729.
