STEWART, Katherine Alberta Walsh Katherine W. Stewart passed away at her home in Carmichael, California, on October 15, 2010, at age 94. During a long career in education, including 26 years as a college counselor, she helped countless numbers of students achieve their educational goals. She was born to Kate M. (Offer) Walsh and Albert C. Walsh on January 20, 1916, in Waring, Texas. She and her mother later moved to San Antonio. At Incarnate Word College, she was president of her sophomore and junior classes. After earning a B.A. degree with honors in zoology at the University of Texas at Austin, she taught school in Benavides and subsequently in Moore, Texas, where her mother had bought a farm and was raising livestock. In 1941 Katherine (Kay) married Lt. Robert Reed (Bob) Stewart, U.S. Army Air Corps, in Fairbanks, Alaska. They had four children; lived in many places including London, England; and traveled extensively. Following Bobs retirement from the Air Force, Kay earned an M.Ed. degree in counseling from the University of Arizona, Tucson. In 1963 she became a counselor at El Camino High School in Sacramento, California. From 1967 to 1993, she was a counselor at American River College (ARC) in Sacramento. She counseled the blind and visually impaired students; served as advisor to the nursing students; helped many nontraditional students, especially women re-entering the workforce, to achieve their educational goals; and performed other counseling and teaching duties. She helped make education accessible to visually impaired students and contributed in many ways to the success that they attained in college and in their personal lives. In 1978 she received the ARC Patrons Award for her work. When she retired in 1993 at age 77, the Senate Rules Committee of the California State Legislature adopted a resolution commending Kay for her contributions to public education in California. She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, a caring friend, and a counselor and teacher who helped students gain the confidence they needed to follow their dreams. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert R. Stewart; daughter Katherine (Sam) Winston of Robstown, TX; daughter Elizabeth J. Stewart of Tempe, AZ; son Robert R. Stewart of Carmichael, CA; daughter Barbara J. Stewart of Cardiff, CA; and granddaughter Deborah A. (Stephen) Blume and great-grandson Tyler W. Blume of Corpus Christi, TX. A memorial service was held in Carmichael, CA. A graveside service will be held at 10:30am Friday, November 19, 2010 at Moore Memorial Cemetery with interment immediately following. Arrangements are under the direction of Hurley Funeral Home, 303 W. College Ave, Devine, Texas 78016 (830) 663-4445.
