Bio:

Mary Margaret Coffman was born in 1839 in the farming community of New Hope, Augusta County, Virginia, to parents John Coffman and Rebecca Erbaugh Coffman. She is the sister of Susannah Coffman (Mrs. Charles Batis), Jacob Coffman (wife Anna Jane Shaner Coffman & 2nd wife Catherine Sniteman Coffman), Elizabeth Coffman (Mrs. John Depriest), Nannie Coffman (Mrs. Jacob Zirkle), Christian Coffman (wife Sarah Cole Coffman), Rebecca Coffman (Mrs. Norval Willis Batis), Barbara Ann Coffman (Mrs. Joseph Leland Sorell) and Hester Coffman.

Granddaughter of Jacob Erbaugh and Esther Funk Erbaugh.

In 1856, Mary wed Henry Towberman and was soon the mother of Edward Thomas Towberman; she became a widow only one year later; she and her infant son moved back to live with her parents and siblings.

In December of 1863, Mary was wed to her brother-in-law, John Hanger Batis, who at that time was a widower and a Constable in Augusta County. Mary gave birth to a second son, William Kenneth Batis, in November of 1864. A few short years later, Mary became a widow for the second time, this time with two youngs sons to raise.

Mary Margaret Coffman would find lasting love and happiness with Russell Newman Wallace, a widower with seven living children, many of whom still resided at home. They married at the American Hotel in Staunton, Virginia on October 11th, 1870.
Mary and Russell would eventually have eight more children of their own before he passed away when their youngest child was only 10 years of age.

Mary Margaret Coffman Wallace was a devoted mother to Edward Thomas Towberman (wife Emma Jones & later Florence Blanche Lair), William Kenneth Batis (Wife, Willie A. Lewis Batis), Minnie Gertrude Wallace (later Mrs. George Washington Yeago), Charles Eugene Wallace (wife, Fannie McKay), Nettie Wallace (Mrs. Louis Dudley McNulty), Orlena Wallace (who died at the age of 2 years), Albert Newman Wallace (later, wife Lula Adella Brownlee), Maude M. Wallace (later, Mrs. John Olin Campbell), Allen Boyd Wallace (later, wife Florence Stringfellow) and Olive Cooper Wallace (later Mrs. Bernard Peyton Allen); a loving step-mother to James Augustus Wallace (wife Nora Engledove), William Armstrong Wallace (wife Mary Agnes "Minnie" Hobson), Alexander "Alec" Wallace (wife Nannie Coffman, niece to Mary Margaret), Thomas Archibald Wallace (wife Blanche Phelps), Ella Virginia "Eileen" Wallace (later, Mrs. Henry Hanson), John Morgan Wallace (wife Nellie Virginia Beaty & later, Daisy Elizabeth Walser) and Lula Katherine Wallace (Mrs. Samuel Miller Davidson); cherished daughter-in-law of Catherine Newman Wallace (who lived with the family throughout most of Mary's marriage to Russell, until Catherine's death in 1881).

After husband Russell died in 1894, Mary continued to operate the Wallace farm with the help of her children and remained a vital participant in their lives; a few years later their son Albert Newman Wallace became the Head of the Family and officially the operator of the Wallace Farm. On the 1900 Census, Mary's daughter Nettie, Nettie's husband Louis McNulty and their 2 year old son, John Wallace McNulty, are living with Mary, as is Mary's oldest son, Edward Towberman, already a widower.

Mary was a beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Niece and Cousin to many. She was very involved in her community and a long-time member of the Lebanon Presbyterian Church. Mary died January 14, 1901, at the age of 61; she is buried next to her husband, Russell Newman Wallace.

Mary Margaret Coffman Towberman Batis Wallace is fondly remembered by all of the families who knew and loved her and by those who know of her.
