Evalena went to school at Catlett and later at Calverton. She had three older brothers and a half-sister, Sadie Croushorn Byers, from her father's first marriage.
Evalena married Ruben A. Heflin when she was 18 in April 1933, and together they raised four children (James, Charles, Eugene, and Faith)and farmed for nearly 50 years on Rte. 607 below Catlett. She died in 1993 at the age of 79 from complications of a hip fracture.
Evalena was my mother, one of the most talented and ingenious women I ever knew. She could hunt, fish, cook, bake, sew, crochet winning afghans, did beautiful prize-winning ceramics. She could draw and paint, sing, play the organ and piano by ear...... in younger life the guitar. She remembered poems and songs from childhood even. She could drive a tractor, farm, can food, fix things.... she made life interesting and colorful for us kids.
