F. Rogers "Connie" Constance, 77, of Westfield, died Wednesday, Feb 25, 1987 at the Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Feb 28, 1987 from the Faith United Methodist Church in Westfield with the Rev. Thomas Dunham officiating. Burial will be in the Westfield South Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-9pm today at the Steinhaus Funeral Home in Westfield or at the church on Saturday from 11am until the time of services. Connie was born July 10, 1909 in Waupaca township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, the son of Frank and Myrtie (Knapp) Constance. In 1929 Connie graduated from Central State Teachers' College, Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He started his teaching career in Portage County, Wisconsin, where he taught from 1929 until 1934. He then taught school, band and athletics at Westboro, Wisconsin from 1934 until 1939.From 1939 to 1943 he taught school, was principal, and coached athletics at Donald, Wisconsin. In 1943 he received a teaching position at Centuria where he taught English, history and geography and coached all the sports until 1945. From 1945 until 1959 he taught school and coached basketball, tumbling, archery, volleyball and baseball in the Montello school system. In 1959, he received his Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also started teaching and coaching in the Westfield school system. He taught English in the high school and physical education in the grade school as well as coaching volleyball, tumbling, cross country and grade school basketball. In 1959 he retired from teaching and coaching and dedicated the remaining years of his life to the Marquette County Fairgrounds were he was caretaker. He funded and oversaw the construction of an impressive baseball field there. He said "The field is a gift to the youth of Marquette County and the home of the Pioneers, Orioles and Sons baseball teams. "Connie loved God, nature, and his Christian siblings. He was numismatist, philatelist, teacher, poet-author, friend of 4-H, sports fan, mycologist, Commissioner of the Marquette Meadows Little League and of the Central Junior Baseball League, member of the Westfield Senior Citizens, Marquette County Historical Society, member of Faith united Methodist Church, Wisconsisn Retired Teachers Association, past member of the Wisconsin Educational association and National Educationa; Association, and was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him and playing sports under him. Connie is survived by on sister, Ferne Harris of St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, Bradford Constance of Grand Rapids, Mich; and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceeded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Charles; and one sister, Margaret. Memorials may be made in his name for the maintenance of the baseball field at the Marquette County Fairgrounds, Westfield, Wisconsin.
