Greatly interested in the militia serving as Colonel of 13th Regiment, 1846-7; Brig. Gen. of the 6th Brigade 1848; Maj. Gen. of 4th Division, 1849-1851 when the militia organization was abandoned.

Appointed Captain on November 30, 1861, and mustered on November 27, 1861, into Company B, 6th Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry (Union) when past 53 years of age. Commissioned Rank: Captain. His health became so impaired that he was forced to resign on July 30, 1862. Filed for Invalid Pension on April 16, 1866 (Application No. 106,503). Died July 20, 1867. Widow Pension filed on October 11, 1869.
