Melvin's first marriage was to Ruby Darlene Ames on September 27, 1948 in WEnatchee, WA.
The marriage to Ruby produced two chilren:
Verna Darleen Johnson 1949 –
Darrel Laverne Johnson 1950 – 1978
Darrel passed before his father in 1978 from leukemia.
Melvin's second marriage was to Charlotte Mae (Beckham) Stephens on October 3, 1956 in Spokane, WA.
Melvin and Charlotte had two children in their marriage, a boy and a girl.
After Charlotte's passing in 1989, at 64 years, on 16 May 1992 Melvin married Margaret Kellough 1940 – 2008 in Zillah, Yakima, Washington.
Melvin left school after the eight grade to help his father on the "homestead", a 800 acre ranch east of Twisp, below Capwright Mountain which includes Jim Johnson Lake, named for his grandfather James Johnson.
He joined the Merchant Marines in 1944, about a year before WW II ended. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to the Methow Valley and ultimately ended up marrying Ruby.
Melvin was very mechanically oriented with a strong work ethic and worked in a variety of jobs throughout his lifetime including golf course maintenance, building maintenance and even owned a Phillips 66 gas station in Yakima, WA. (16th and Summitview). Melvin also worked on the first 747 prototype and first several aircraft at Boeing's Everett plant in the late 1960's.
Melvin, a heavy smoker for his entire life, ultimately passed on from the effects of emphysema.
