John Burton Akers was born January 1, 1894 in Richland, Texas, son of John Hogan Akers and Laura Theodora Brown. This father was orginally from Akersville Kentucky. He married his schoolmate Maude Hope Thompson from Thornton Texas in 1914. The Akers had two sons J.B. Jr and James Hogan while on a farm between Ysleta and Clint, Texas. Mr. Akers had farmed land in southern Texas inherited from his father. Unfortunately he lost his farm due to a bank panic and a banker ran off with all his bank money. Losing his money, Mr. Akers could not pay his note and lost his land in 1921. Soon afterward he landed a job as a ditch rider in Garfield, New Mexico. One of his work assignments was north in Elephant Butte where he was tangled in controversy. The previous ditch rider was shot at and resigned. The issue was the distribution of water to farmers land. Akers stood his ground and the troublemakers never came back. In 1924 he had a son Robert and found his way to Las Cruces as a ditch rider. While in Las Cruces, one Akers child died and another paralyzed. He later moved up a ways to Hatch because of the milk producers were convenient to his new venture of cow farming. He bought a farm with a milkbarn and ran a grocery store. He worked at Brezeal's store and Porter Lumber. All their children went to Hatch High School and now live in Colorado, Arizona, and Arkansas. John died in 1954 and his wife Hope lived many years afterward spending time in Arizona with his daughter and then her final days in New Mexico.
