Nannie and Seward moved from Georgia in the late 1930s to make a better life in Portsmouth, Virginia. They lived there until their deaths. They were both brought back to Georgia for burial.

Though she had no children of her own, Nannie was particularly close to her niece, Evelyn Howland who passed away in 1978. Evelyn who also spent most of her life in Virginia was also brought back to Georgia for burial with her family in the same cemetery. Evelyn's husband, James Rufus Howland, died five years later in 1983. He was survived by his second wife and is buried at Chesapeake Memorial Park in Chesapeake, Virginia.
