Benton S. Beckley Commits Suicide (January 17, 1939)
Benton S. Beckley, prominent farmer of Leonard, committed suicide yesterday morning by jumping into a well with eight feet of water in it.
When his daughter, Mrs. Vera Stewart, with whom he made his home, awakened yesterday morning she discovered her father's absence. He was found at 8 o'clock in a cistern at his sister’s Mrs. Ola Woodward's home adjoining them. It is thought that death occurred around 4:30 a.m.
Mr. Beckley had been in ill health for two years of a complication of diseases. Several weeks ago he entered Grim-Smith hospital in Kirksville and was there for ten days under observation. Since his return home he has been confined to his bed.
Born in Ohio August 7, 1868, Mr. Beckley lived a greater part of his life on a farm south of Leonard. Nine years ago he moved to Leonard where he lived until his death. He was married January 10, 1894, to Miss Mabel Hollenbeck who died August 16, 1915. A daughter, Lola, also died in 1923. Mr. Beckley was married to Mrs. Anna Kuntz in 1928.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Stewart, and Mrs. Grace Prange of south of here; two sons, Alfred, who lives on the home farm, and Elwyn of Leonard; three brothers, E. P. of Monticello, Minnesota; Frank of Hannibal; and Harry of Spokane, Washington; and three sisters, Mrs. Ola Woodward of Leonard; Mrs. S. C. Myers of Fresno, California; and Mrs. C. J. Ryland, Carmel, California.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 at the Christian Church in Leonard. Burial will be in the local I.O.O.F. [Shelby Memorial] Cemetery.
