MAX H. BURGOYNE, Sr., 90, loving father and loyal friend, passed away Sunday afternoon, November 6, 2011 at Via Christi/St. Francis Hospital.

Born on December 5, 1920 in Beggs, Oklahoma, he was the son of Ezra Grover and Lula (Freeman) Burgoyne. Max graduated from Prairie View High School near Seminole, Oklahoma in 1938 and Wichita State University in 1951.

Max proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a pharmacist mate, first class, in the Pacific area during WWII.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis J. Ellinger on January 20, 1946 in Winfield, Kansas, and they celebrated sixty-three years together until her death in 2009. Max was proud of his employment history which began with operating a road side pop stand and selling "Grit" magazine when he was six, and including working in a country grocery and chopping cotton at sixteen. He worked at Beech while attending Wichita State University. Max was a Boy Scout Executive from 1954 to 1978. He took pleasure his responsibility of running camps at TaWaKoNi and Quivira Scout Ranch. After retiring from scouting, he sold real estate and was employed by Boeing as a vendor cost analyst. The final job in his eighty-four year history was the Tuesday clerk in the gift shop at Prairie Homestead where he resided.

During his retirement Max enjoyed traveling, woodworking and helping others with home improvement projects. His sense of humor, and ability to sneak in a joke for any occasion will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

His family includes: His son: Max Burgoyne, Jr., and wife Rita; His daughters: Barbara Hankins and husband Lee, Brenda Burgoyne Edgington and husband Reed, and Becky Burgoyne; His sister: Margaret Hughes of Winfield, KS; His grandchildren: Gary Hankins and wife Cheryl, Craig Hankins and wife Sonya, Christopher Hankins and wife Amber, Cooper Edgington and wife Paige and Lauren Edgington; and His 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother Grover.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, 3515 S. Elizabeth in Wichita. Military committal honors will follow at 12:00 P.M. at Highland Cemetery in Winfield.

Memorials have been established in Mr. Burgoyne's name for the Quivera Council Boy Scouts of America and the United Methodist Open Door. Condolences may be sent to 220 S. Belmont, Wichita, Kansas 67218. The family would like to thank Dr. Lamont Bloom and Via Christi/St. Francis 8 SW staff for Max's care.
