Richard was reared with his brother, Carl in the home of his uncle and aunt, Thomas & Maude Lyon Neuhausen in Portland. He worked for various newspapers in Portland and McDonald Douglas during WWII. He later moved to Ohio and Chicago where he was with Blue Cross. He was married to Nancy Guild and had three children: Gary, Lynn and Susan.
