Third Corporal/"Red Rover" Shackelford's Company. After Fannin's withdrawel from Refugio to Goliad about February 12,1836 he was joined,at Goliad by: The "Red Rovers," Captain Jack Shackelford, enlisted at Courtland,and Tuscumbia, Alabama,and armed,with muskets borrowed from the State of Alabama. The "Red Rover" were a large company,in all about seventy men. They landed in Matagorda Bay,January 19,1836,and joined Fannin at Goliad about February 13th. After Fannin's arrival at Goliad,he reorganized several of his companies and with them constituted the second battalion of a provisiinal regiment, of which the "Georgia Battalion,"was forst. This second,or "La Fayette," Battation included:(1) The "Red Rover," Captain Jack Shackelford. CPL John Barley was a Massacre victim on March 27,1836.
