Harry D. Matheny, 88, of Elizabeth passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Wood County, the son of the late James and Anna Mae Stienhoff Matheny. He was the owner of Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home and a lifetime farmer. He retired from Corning Glass after 30 years of service; was a Sgt. in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II; a member of Beulah Humble Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder and Sunday school superintendent; served as county commission of Wirt County for 18 years; was a trustee of Camp Barbe Association; a lifetime member of the Wirt County Fair Association; was serving as treasurer of the Beulah Hill Cemetery; was a member of Wirt County Farm Bureau, where he served as president for several years; and was a member of the VFW of Wirt County.

Surviving are children, James and Judith Matheny of Elizabeth; four brothers, Robert Matheny, Delbert and Ruby Matheny of Mineral Wells, Roy and Martha Matheny and Billy and Shelby Matheny, all of Parkersburg; four grandchildren, Gerald and Lori Matheny, Brent and Stacey Matheny, Chris and Mike Whited and Harry "Chip" and Sherry Matheny, all of Elizabeth; four great-grandchildren, Nikki Leann Bush of Spencer, Chantae and Dakota Matheny and Virginia Lee Whited, all of Elizabeth; a brother and sister-in-law, June and Barcelena Townsend of Parkersburg; sister-in-laws, Virginia Sims of Elizabeth and Marguerette Mace of Point Pleasant; several nieces and nephews; five step grandchildren, Rory Marant, Brittany Copen and Nikki and Dustin Garner, all of Elizabeth, Janifer Whited Poole of Parkersburg and Stephanie and Robert Parsons of Grantsville; two step great-great-grandsons, Hunter James of Parkersburg and Garett Wayne of Grantsville; two foster great-grandsons, Danny and Dustin Rogers of Elizabeth; and a foster great-granddaughter, Amy Turner of Elizabeth.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Juanita Mace Matheny in 2003; a brother, Richard; a sister, Beulah Caltrider; three brothers-in-law; and a sister-in-law.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Matheny-Pomroy Funeral Home, with the Rev. William D. Stutler officiating. Burial will be in the Beulah Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. today.

In lieu of other remembrances, donations may be made to the Beulah Hill Church Building Fund or Camp Barbe Association.
