Thomas is the son of Lyndon and Deborah (Rundell) King. He received a common school education in his native New York where he worked for several years as a station agent. He moved to Minneapolis in 1862 at the urging of his half brother, William S. King. He became a prominent newspaperman working first for the State Atlas, then the St. Paul Pioneer, and the Pioneer Press where he remained until he left the business in 1881 to engage in the electric lighting business. He organized the Minnesota Bush Electric Lighting Company, which introducted electric lights to Minneapolis. For the last five years of his life, he was in the fire insurance business as a partner with Calhoun & Thompson. He died suddenly after becoming ill with severe pains in his head which his doctor attributed to cerebral apoplexy.
