In her youth, Bertie Mason attended the public schools of Atlantic City where she was a classmate of her future sister-in-law, Marian Hargreaves Smith.
Bertie, we are told, was distrustful of men and consequently never married. Like so many members of the Mason family she loved children despite the fact she never had any of her own. She was especially fond of her grand-nephew, Willard Mason Rogers, and enjoyed pushing him in his carriage.
In her 38th year, Bertie developed a carbuncle which became infected. Blood poisoning resulted and she died at her parents' home on 2 March 1912. Following funeral services at St. Paul's Methodist-Episcopal Church, her body was conveyed by a special funeral train to the Atlantic City Cemetery in Pleasantville, New Jersey where she was buried in the Mason family plot.
Memorial:
IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE of our dear daughter aand sister, Bertie Mason, who departed this life March 2nd 1912.
Dearest one thou has left us,
And the loss we greatly feel.
But t'was God that has bereft us,
He can all oursorrows heal.
Yet again we hope to meet her
When the day of grace has fled,
Then in Heaven with joy to greet her.
Where no farewell tears are shed.
Deeply love and sadly missed by
FATHER, MOTHER, BROTHERS and SISTERS.
