Opera Singer. A dramatic tenor who started as a baritone, he shall probably be remembered for his Wagnerian interpretations. The child of a middle class family, he was raised in Melbourne, started singing in public at nine, and had his first entertainment job with a local radio station. After receiving some vocal training he competed in the 1950 Mobil Quest which was won by Joan Sutherland, then journeyed to London where he studied with noted tenor di grazia from the 1920s Dino Borgioli. Hired as a rehearsal singer by Sir Thomas Beecham he gained experience and even took the role of the First Janissary in Sir Thomas' recording of Mozart's "The Abduction From the Seraglio". Weaving was then to spend two years with Richard Bonynge during which he was converted to a tenor; signed by Sadler's Wells he made his debut as Danilo in Franz Lehar's "The Merry Widow". During his three years at Sadler's Wells he continued studying and gradually expanded his repertoire to include, among other roles, the title leads of Verdi's "Otello", Giordano's "Andrea Chenier, Offenbach's "The Tales Of Hoffman" and Gounod's "Faust" as well as Don Jose from Bizet's "Carmen", Canio in Leoncavallo's "I Pagliacci", and Florestan in Beethoven's "Fidelio". Trained in Wagner's operas by German soprano Anni Assian-Rohling he became a frequent first choice for the leads in "Lohengrin" and "The Ring Cycle". Over his career Weaving headlined at the principle venues of Europe and Australia while becoming well known on European and American radio and television. Driven from the stage in 1986 by arthritis he remained in Australia and ran a shoe shop, a restaurant, and a music academy. He died following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer which was diagnosed shortly after he recocated to Ljunskile, Sweden.
