Former Alba GI Killed

ALBA, Mo. - Specialist Fourth Class David Lee Betebenner, 22, formerly of Alba, was killed in action in Vietnam Monday, May 6. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl C. Betebenner of Alba, have been notified. He was assigned to the 196th Infantry. Specialist Betebenner's home was in Owasso, Okla., where his widow and daughter, Robin Elaine, live. Mrs. Betebenner is the former Marjorie M. Hunnell of Carthage. He entered the service July 25, 1967 and was sent to Vietnam January 1, 1968. He was born March 9, 1946 in Web City and was graduated from Alba high school in 1964. Prior to moving to Owasso he was employed by Leggett & Platt of Carthage. He was a member of the First Baptist church in Owasso. In addition to his widow, daughter and parents, he is survived by two brothers, Stanley Betebenner of Alba, and Harry Betebenner of Webb City and three sisters, Mrs. Patricia Lisignilor of Bellevue, Wash., Mrs. Ella Mae Hok of San Rafael, Calif., and Mrs. Linda Hooe of Rock Island, Ill. Betebenner, 22, who was killed in Vietnam May 6, was scheduled to reach Carthage this afternoon after being flown to Springfield, arriving late this morning. Sergeant Betebenner's home was in Owassa, Okla. He was a native of Webb City and graduated from Alba high school. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Betebenner of Alba. His widow, Mrs. Marjorie Hunnel Betebenner, and a daughter, Robin Elaine, are here from Owassa and are staying in the home of Ronald Gilman, 1515 Robertson avenue. Services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the First Baptist church. The Rev. Lawrence Cleland and the Rev. Garland Hobbs of Oklahoma and the Rev. C. R. Lemons of Alba, will officiate. Burial will be in Park cemetery. The body will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 7 o'clock until 9 o'clock Wednesday night at the Knell mortuary.
