POTTENGER Alva J. passed away peacefully on November 8, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. Born to Earl A. and Mary Eva (Faucett) Pottenger on July 7, 1929, in Fairfield, Ohio, Alva was the oldest son of nine children. Educated in the Fairfield schools, Alva graduated from Fairfield High School in 1947, where he served as Vice President of his Senior class. He played in the high school band and excelled in football, baseball, track, and basketball, earning ribbons in track. Alva married his high school sweetheart, Zedith Orr, on July 15, 1950, at Grace Methodist Church in Hamilton, Ohio. He was a longtime member of Grace Methodist and later transferred his membership to St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Fairfield. Alva was employed by the Hamilton Journal News where he worked for 38 years, retiring as the Foreman of the Press Room and Stereotype Department. Alva and his wife Zedith had three sons; Daniel Joe, Edward Jay, and Richard Lynn. Alva was a loving father and enjoyed spending time with his sons, serving as Treasurer of Cub Scout Pack #969 as well as coaching in the Fairfield Farm League and Little League for many years. He played church softball for Grace Methodist, played trumpet in many bands, and enjoyed camping and fishing. Alva also loved to travel in his Airstream and did so extensively throughout the continental United States, Canada, Newfoundland, and even spent a summer traveling in Alaska. He was a 41-year member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI) and served as presidents for the Cincinnati and Ohio units. He was a member of the Elktones Barber Shop Quartet, sang in many choirs and vocal clubs, and also sang for several weddings. In retirement, he enjoyed spending his winters at Traveler's Rest in Dade City, Florida. Alva was preceded in death by his father and mother, his twin brother Albert, and his sisters Virginia DeWalt and Earla Erven. He is survived by his wife Zedith; his sons Daniel (Debra), Edward (Pamela), and Richard (Melissa); his seven grandchildren: Eric (Tami) Pottenger, Audra (Jeff) Johnson, Carmen (Mark) Hurst, Blair (Carol Dillon) Pottenger, Taisha (Dan) Copeland, Matthew (Stacie) Pottenger, Elizabeth (Jon) Anspach; his six great-grandchildren: Briannah, Jayden, Chloe, Claire, Corinne, and Kendall; his brothers Howard, Donald, and Lynn Pottenger; and his sisters Edna Stieg and Marilyn Singleton. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 12, 2011, at 10am at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 4601 Fairfield Avenue, Fairfield. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday November 11, 2011 from 6-8pm at the Paul R. Young Funeral Home, 3950 Pleasant Avenue, Hamilton.
