Hiram was a farmer and operated a distillery in Sharon Township, just north of what is now Columbus, Ohio and just south of Worthington, Ohio.
In 1850 he was farming 160 acres. He had horses, milk cows, cattle, pigs and sheep. He farmed corn, potatoes, hay, wool, butter, cheese, orchard products and home make products, probably referring to whiskey.
