Enlisted at Albany, New York on 15 September 1861 to serve for 3 years as a private in Co. H, 44th New York Infantry. The 44th was also known as the "Ellsworth Avengers." It had a number of requirements for one to even be considered for it. Had to be 5 feet 9 inches tall, single and of good moral character.
He was discharged due to disability on 2 January 1863 in Baltimore, Maryland.
