He grew up in West Rutland and entered the U.S. Army in 1944 during WWII to serve in the infantry until shortly before the war ended in 1945.
Shortly after he came home, he was introduced to the love of his life, Shirley, and they were married in March 1946. Soon afterwards, they bought their house and corner store, Myers' Grocery Store in Rutland.
Dan and Shirley were active and instrumental in founding the Rutland Jewish Center, of which they have been lifelong supporters; and were active members of the Vermont Small Grocers Association.
Dan was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans Association and Hiram Lodge #101, F&AM in West Rutland, Vt.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley (Mehl) of Rutland; his three sons, Robert of Rutland, Michael and wife Sandra of Sharon, Mass., Edward and wife Lesley of Gainesville, Fla.; his granddaughter, Leah and her husband Charles Eisenberg, M.D., of Norfolk, Va.; and three grandsons, Joshua and his wife Diane of Bernardsville, N.J., and Christopher and Benjamin of Gainesville, Fla.
He was predeceased by brothers, Herman of Dallas, Texas, Louis of Glens Falls, N.Y., and their spouses, Bodonna and Lila, respectively.
The funeral for Daniel will be on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. in the Rutland Jewish Cemetery in Clarendon across from the airport. The family asks that no flowers be sent to the cemetery or house.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland Jewish Center, 96 Grove St., Rutland, VT 05701.
