Robert was the fifth of seven children born to David Franklin and Louise Elizabeth (Martin) Arndt. He married Florence Propst in 1920 and they were the parents of six children: David Franklin, Flora Cutine, Louise Jenette, Mary Verna, Shirley Belle and Robert Eugene.
