Nathan(iel) (Jonathan) Davis Sr
married 1798--h/o Jane Elizabeth Ewing and Mary Strickland.

I've been doing extensive primary record research of Nathan Davis and his brother Clement Davis, who had both for a time lived in Jackson County, Illinois. In at least two dozen such sources in Livington County, KY, Randolph County, IL, Jackson County, IL, Lawrence County, AR, Pulaski County, AR and various parts of East Texas, I have only found him listed as Nathan Davis.

In Two Centuries in East Texas, by G. L. Crocket (1932), it clearly states that Nathan had six children. One of these was very clearly the wife of Jacob Brillhart. Jacob died in Lawrence County, AR, in 1828. I've found no record of her given name, though it was likely Eliza or Elizabeth, based on undocumented trees. So there would seem to be people incorrectly attributed as Nathan's children in this memorial.

If you have any interest in seeing my draft research, contact me at [email protected] and I will send you a link to the Google Docs document that I am working on.

By the way, thanks for the tip to search in Laurens County, SC for Nathan and Clement. I've done extensive research in Newberry County, SC and Pendleton District, SC for this clan of Davises, but had not yet ventured into Laurens County. With luck, that will extend my timeline back another half dozen years or so.

Nathan was not the son of Vann Davis. Vann had a son Hezekiah, who fought during the Revolutionary War and lived long enough to apply for a pension and thus give clear details of where he had lived. Hezekiah had a brother named Nathan, but he did not have a brother named Clement. There is clear evidence that the Nathan Davis who lived near Hezekiah Davis in Jackson County, Illinois was the brother of Clement Davis. The identity of the father of Nathan and Clement remains a mystery, one that isn't likely to be solved given the huge number of inter-related Davises in that part of SC, and the dearth of records in some counties.

I also have a detailed timeline of Clement Davis from his time in Christian County, Kentucky in 1799, and there are perhaps tax records for him in Logan County, Kentucky shortly before that time. He remained in Jackson County. He had two children, one of whom preceded him in death. Three grandchildren survived him.
